More commonly, moon cactus propagation is achieved by removing the offsets, which are smaller versions of the parent plant growing from the base of the rootstock. These divide away easily and root readily in a cactus potting soil.
To separate the moon cactus pup from the parent, it is necessary to 1) inspect the health of the plant, select a healthy, good-sized pup, 2) twist and turn the pup to break it off, and 3) propagate the pup. One primary method of propagating is by grafting- joining two different plants to form a new plant.
You can propagate the moon cactus pups but remember that unless they have some green or area of darker color on them, they will not be able to survive without being grafted to a host cactus. You can also leave them where they are, or remove them if you prefer the look of your Moon cactus without them.
On average, a Moon Cactus can live anywhere between one to three years. However, there are a few anecdotes of succulent keepers who have kept specimens well over five years. On the other hand, it is not unusual for a Moon Cactus to live just a few months, especially if you do not have any experience caring for one.
Fertilize moon cactus with 1/4 teaspoon of 15-15-15 water-soluble fertilizer mixed into 1 gallon of water every week during the spring and summer. Apply the fertilizer in place of one watering, using the same amount of fertilizer solution as you would normally use to water the plant.
